This word, also spelled humus, houmous, and houmus, is both Arabic and Hebrew for chickpea. It is also the name of the thick Middle Eastern purée made of mashed chickpeas, tahini (sesame paste), olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, and other spices, used as a sandwich filling, spread, or dip.
