Star anise is a cluster of seed pods that together form the shape of an eight-pointed star. It is similar in flavour and fragrance to common aniseed, but it is more robust and liquorice-like indeed, the essential oil of star anise is used in the West for the making of liqueurs and other aniseed-flavoured food products.
Star anise is an essential ingredient of five-spice powder and is widely used in braised dishes, to which it imparts a rich taste and fragrance. It is sold in plastic packs by Chinese or Asian grocers, and should be stored in a tightly covered jar in a cool, dry place.
