REMARKS Maximum length 20 cm. Has two spots on each side near the head. Larval sardines and anchovies are known as poutine or poutina in the south of France, and bianchetti or gianchetti in parts of Italy.

This species is uncommon in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean. The water temperatures which suit it are somewhat lower than that which suits the two species on the next page.
