REMARKS Maximum length 60 cm. This prized fish has a golden spot on each cheek and another one, crescent-shaped, between the eyes. It frequents salt-water lakes as well as the open sea. It was sacred to Aphrodite, whether because of its beauty or because it is hermaphrodite I do not know.

The French name is sometimes given as ‘dorade royale’, but for (he correct use of the name ‘dorade’.
