REMARKS Maximum length 200 cm. A large, hungry fish, which makes a noise in the water, and which used to be classified as Sciaena aquila. Sciaena is a Greek word indicating a dark colour, while aquila (eagle) stands for voracity. The Italian and Turkish names refer to the characteristic golden throat of this fish.
