Ray’s Bream

Brama Brama (Bonnaterre)

Appears in

By Alan Davidson

Published 1981

  • About

Family Bramidae

REMARKS Maximum length 70 cm. A brown-grey deep-water fish which appears at the surface during the summer. Found in many seas, but in the Mediterranean is restricted to the centre and west.

Ray’s bream also occurs on both North American coasts, where it is known as the pomfret. It migrates annually into northern European waters in the autumn and winter, sometimes in sufficient numbers to make it almost common, although it is not marketed frequently despite the excellence of its flesh.
