REMARKS Maximum length 12 cm. The oyster needs no explanation, except to say that there are a number of local varieties of this species in the Mediterranean, and that the other, elongated, species Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) (the Portuguese oyster, Fr. portugaise, Sp. ostión) is increasingly common.
