Date-Shell

Lithophaga Lithophaga (Linnaeus)

Appears in

By Alan Davidson

Published 1981

  • About

Family Mytilidae

REMARKS Up to 10 cm, but slimmer than the  mussel and coloured rather like dates. The  datte de mer embeds itself in rocks and is  therefore difficult to gather. The coast near  La Spezia in Italy is one place where it is  common.

CUISINE Usually eaten raw. Quite good. Makes a better soup than mussels.
