REMARKS Maximum length 50 cm. The back is a brilliant blue-black, the flanks and belly silver to white and the sides of the head golden. Note the row of spots, which may number six or seven on each side.

This slightly smaller shad has a more extensive northward range than the allis shad, and is present in the Baltic, although not common there.
