REMARKS This species, shown at the top of the next page, occurs on both sides of the Atlantic. On the American side it may reach a length of 60 cm. It resembles the winter flounder (see above), but may be distinguished from it by the presence of deep pits on the blind side of its head and by the greater number of rays in its dorsal and anal fins. Its names include plie grise and flet (Canada), smørflyndre (Norway), mareflundra (Sweden), skærising (Denmark) and langlúra (Iceland). The body is thin, but the flavour good. Fry, poach or steam.
