Families Mactridae and Lutrariidae

The species catalogued on the previous page is by far the most important clam in this group, but is only one of a number of related clams which are found on the European side of the Atlantic and are worth eating. I describe two such species below and provide drawings of them at the foot of the page.

Mactra corallina (Linnaeus), the RAYED TROUGH-SHELL, is usually creamy in colour, with purplish tints and brown rays. It is of good quality and ranges from Norway down to the Mediterranean. It is called almeijóla in Portugal; and blanchet, fije, fausse palourde or fausse praire in France, the last two names implying an intent to deceive, of which the creature must surely be acquitted.
