In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, this term applied only to lettuce or to lettuce-like salad greens. Today Selaat is used in the same broad sense as in English, so that Caesar salad becomes Kaiserselaat, ham salad becomes Schunke Selaat, and so forth.
