Brewing is a new direction for the Middleton family who have been involved in farming and forestry in Cromarty for 200 years, but it is not new to the town itself where the Old Brewery, built in 1790, still stands. Around 1744, there were at least 25 breweries operating in Cromarty, perhaps an indication of the quality grain grown in the Black Isle and the wider Easter Ross region. Much of the grain grown on local farms would have been malted for ale so small-scale brewing was common at that time. It was the export demand for this quality grain that led to the decline in brewing in the area.
