Portan, like caladoc and chasan, is a cross made by French ampelographer Paul Truel at the inra station at Domaine de Vassal. In this case he crossed Grenache Noir and Portugais Bleu (Blauer portugieser) to develop a Grenache-like variety that would ripen even in the Midi’s cooler zones. By 2011, it was grown on just 200 ha of Languedoc vineyard.
