  • About
‘You’ve got mail from the London School of Economics (LSE) lying on the doorstep. Get Mummy, let’s open it!’ Daddy was alone in his excitement. The British stamp stared up at me. I picked up the envelope with apprehension and took a deep breath: ‘I got a conditional offer to read Law.’ My heart filled with resignation.

It was a pleasant winter’s evening: a moist sea breeze caressed skin, easing the day’s heat. Winter was always welcomed in Karachi – a time for parties, outdoor meals and trips to the beach. I wanted to get away from the house to escape chats about London and law, but it wasn’t like I could go out with friends, or for a walk on my own, even though the streets were much calmer and safer since Benazir Bhutto had been elected prime minister in 1993.
