Another waffle that is often depicted when speaking of ‘The Belgian Waffle’ is the Luikse wafel (Liège waffle). While the Brussels and Flemish waffles are perfectly rectangular and golden, the Liège waffle is oval and golden brown, characterised by speckles of sugar nibs and generous thickness. The thickness is generally the same for the three waffles, though old waffle irons were less deep. The Liège waffle is the only waffle made to be eaten as a street food (not counting the lacquemant, which is fairground food).
