‘Apéro’ is short for aperitif! and really means pre-dinner drinks, which I learned all about in France. There things are not the same as in the Netherlands where everyone drinks white wine or a glass of beer. In France, everyone gets their own personalised drink as an aperitif and wine is only drunk during meals. I felt I went from ‘country plain’ to ‘posh Parisian’. Now I have a lot of ‘aperos’ behind me and many different and personalised mixed drinks. I learned to make a lot of aperitifs myself from my friends in Provence, since a drink sure hits the spot after a game of boules.
