  • About
August is a relentless month, blowing
Marrows out of proportion, mixing
Old broad beans and new swedes, ending
Spring’s reign with dull roots.
High summer sees the end of many of summer’s raw materials – the salmon, sea trout, Jersey Royal new potatoes, cherries and first-growth strawberries which all seemed so exciting two months ago. This, rather than September, is cross-over month. The momentum changes and plums, English apples and the first real game birds mark the start of the end of the year.
