Rome and the Lazio Region

Appears in
The Italian Regional Cookbook

  • About
Although the allure of Rome is very strong, Lazio offers an extraordinary variety of landscapes to delight the visitor: wide beaches, pine woods, mountains, gentle hills and expansive plains dotted with picturesque monasteries and ancient villages.
The Lazio region experiences the typical Mediterranean climate that is characteristic of the western coast of Italy, with hot summers and temperate spring and autumn weather, giving a long growing season that is ideal for farming. Even tender crops such as citrus fruits can be grown in the south of the region, although la tramontana, the cold winter wind that blows from the mountains, can cast a chill over the whole area.
