One of my earliest food memories is picking wild raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and gooseberries from bramble bushes near my house in Guildford, Surrey, in the UK. I remember fruit crumbles with custard – and I still love them. I also recall boiled eggs with buttery soldiers and even now I like too much butter on my bread. I remember a special dinner for Dad’s birthday when I was young and Mum making a dish with fillet steak and lobster, which I thought was the best thing ever, and I felt very sophisticated eating it. I think it probably cost them an arm and a leg.
