  • About

Hopper shops are easy to spot in Sri Lanka because the cook who makes the Hoppers stands at the front of the shop, turning them out one by one.

The reason I ended up in Arugam Bay was because of a tip from a traveler I’d met in a train station in India. One of her favorite places was a small village in southeastern Sri Lanka, near Lahugala National Park. She’d spent almost a month there, she told me, but she had no memory of nearly ten days of that time! She’d been bitten by a snake and had fallen unconscious. The villagers had taken her in and given her local treatments for the snake bite, and she’d survived. Still, it was one of her favorite places in the world. Must be pretty good, I thought.
