Spain, India, and Bangladesh
Who doesn’t love milk-based desserts? They are a firm favourite in my family, cherished for their rich and creamy textures. As we explore these delightful treats, we uncover deep cultural significance and traditions in South Asia and Spain.
In South Asia, particularly in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, milk-based puddings like kheer (payesh in Bengali) and Shemai hold a special place in festive celebrations and rituals. Kheer, made by simmering rice in milk with sugar, cardamom, and sometimes saffron, symbolises prosperity and good fortune. Often served as a blessed offering to deities, kheer is shared among family and friends during joyous occasions such as Diwali, Eid, and weddings. Seviyan, Semian, or vermicelli pudding, is another cherished dessert popular during Eid. The practice of preparing and sharing Seviyan during Eid al-Fitr beautifully captures the essence of community and togetherness.
