Sandwiches
The practical aspect of eating food as a sandwich is simple and straightforward; various foods, encased between pieces of bread, or wrapped in a soft flatbread, can be easily picked up and brought to mouth without utensils, plate, table, or even a place to sit.

Most people know, at least vaguely, the story of John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who, while at the gambling tables of London in the 1700s, was first to put a couple of slices of roast beef between two pieces of bread to eat so he would not interrupt his gaming. Eminently practical guy he was. That is the story that has stuck, for today we all call the savory quick meals by his title. As an aside, the place name Sandwich, in Kent, meant “sand place” in Old English, a fact that may have some relevance to many of us who may remember getting sand in our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches while playing at the beach as children.
