Paulette Antilogus is a tiny, deceptively delicate woman in her sixties who works all day in the fields with her husband during the grape harvest and then returns home to cook him a good traditional meal. She and her family have always lived in the big old farmhouse that looks down over vineyards to the Roman town of Vaison, and beyond Vaison to the barren peak of Mont Ventoux. On the next vineyard live her sister & brother-in-law, the former as well-known a cook as Paulette, the latter, with Pauletteās husband, an inspired maker of the local fortified wines - vin dāorange, vin de noix (made from fresh green walnuts) and the almost lethal Farigoule, made from wild thyme.
