Hidden among nondescript buildings is a black-and-white sign marking the tree-lined entrance path of a multifamily residential building. It was built in the 1950s, and movie memorabilia from the time lines the elevator that takes diners to the top floor, where a simple white door reveals a penthouse apartment that in 2011 was converted into the stylish Café Laurent. Contemporary furniture and starched white cotton tablecloths give the interior an air of sophistication and elegance. Walls covered floor to ceiling with retro newspapers and posters add a touch of nostalgia. White, laced drapes pulled back with bows decorate the windows of the outdoor balcony dining area. Guests seated by the windows are privy to ocean views combined with an urban landscape, including old American cars driving by homes and an up-close view of FOCSA. Built in 1956 and named after the contracting company, FOCSA is known as an engineering wonder since its tall, concrete, modern-style structure was built without the use of cranes.
