In 1974, Bevan and Paula Rutt left Adelaide on a seven-week ‘whistle-stop’ adventure, towing a very special caravan. The purpose-built mobile display unit was destined for Darwin to help raise money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association of South Australia and the Northern Territory, and to promote its services to the visually impaired.
As executive officer of the association, Bevan decided to deliver the caravan to the Top End himself, taking time to visit supporters along the way. So he and Paula set off by road to Port Augusta, where they loaded their vehicle and the van onto The Ghan for the long haul to Alice Springs.
