A little over 1 percent of Americans have peanut allergies. This may not sound like a significant number, but for those million-plus people with allergies, it can be a very big deal. For some, even a little exposure can produce serious consequences that could result in hospitalization, or far worse. Rather than take a chance, many institutions have opted to go peanut-free. Most school systems have a policy regarding allergies, ranging from being completely peanut-free, as is the case in most pre-K and daycare centers, to having a peanut-free table in the school cafeteria.
