Jill Norman is a respected author and editor with a wide knowledge and appreciation of foods from many parts of the world. In the 1970s she created the food and wine list for Penguin Books. This led to travels in pursuit of food and drink, and a passion to discover the origins of herbs and spices and how they are used. She is acknowledged internationally as an authority on herbs and spices. Her books on food and cooking have been widely translated and won awards in many countries. Jill’s interests also extend to wine and she talks and writes on food and wine pairing and on travels through wine lands. During her time at Penguin Books she worked closely with Elizabeth David and is literary trustee of the Elizabeth David Estate UK. She is a founder-member of the London Slow Food Convivium and of the Oxford Food Symposium, at which she is a regular contributor, and a trustee of the Jane Grigson Trust. She has recorded her life story for the National Sound Archive at the British Library.

Selections from Winter Food

I find the English winter dreary and depressing, so I turn to food for comfort and pleasure. Whenever I travelled to other wintry places, I found new ideas for dishes to enliven meals on damp, chilly days. Winter vegetables are often thought of as dull, but they need not be if treated well. Here are 12 of my favourite recipes from the book.
