Blackberry-Apple Compote with Lemon

Jean-Marie fell in love with this kind of simple fruit dessert when living in England with his English wife. He likes English fruit desserts because they are very easy; they can be served with breakfast, lunch, or dinner; and they celebrate the seasons.

Ingredients

  • 4 Gala or Golden Delicious apples
  • 1 pint ripe blackberries
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water zest of 1 lemon
  • small pinch salt

Method

Peel the apples, core them, and cut them into eighths.

Put the apple slices in a 2-quart saucepan with all the other ingredients. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook slowly for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool. Refrigerate, covered, until needed, for up to 2 days. Serve in a crystal bowl with your choice of cream, vanilla ice cream, or plain yogurt.
