My favourite establishment in the Newark neighbourhood where I grew up was Blasi’s Great Big Hole in the Wall, a hot dog joint a couple of blocks from where we lived. The name wasn’t a fantasy: There was a bar next door and the owners of Blasi’s and of Campesi’s bar broke a rough opening in the common wall of the two businesses so the food could be passed directly into the bar.
