Pease Brose

Cook’s Tip: More easily digested than either uncooked oatmeal or beremeal, this is the favoured brose meal. It is, like porridge, entirely a matter of personal taste what you mix it with, but it is a stronger taste than oatmeal or beremeal and it works less well with sharp fruits and better with more mellow raisins, apricots, dates and nuts.


  • 2 tablespoons peasemeal
  • 250 ml (8 fl oz) boiling water or hot milk
  • Knob of butter Salt
  • 1 tablespoon currants
  • Honey or sugar to taste


Mixing and Eating

Put the peasemeal into a bowl. Pour over the boiling water or hot milk and stir in. Then add the knob of butter and stir. Season with salt and mix in the currants. Finally, sweeten to taste and serve with more butter.
