Ingredients: 20 large marshmallows (¼ lb.); 2 c. sugar; 2¾ c. flour; 1½ tsp. salt; 1½ tsp. baking soda; 2 eggs; ½ c. shortening; 1 c. walnut halves; 2 c. unsweetened applesauce; 1 tsp. ground cinnamon; ¼ tsp. baking powder; ½ tsp. ground allspice; ½ tsp. ground cloves

You push marshmallows into cake batter in pan just before baking; they rise to the top during baking and make topping. Easier than frosting

Ingredients

2¾ c. flour
2 c. sugar
1½ tsp.

Vegetarian

Method

Sift together flour, sugar, soda, salt, baking powder and spices.
Add shortening, eggs and applesauce. Beat until smooth and blended.
Stir in walnuts. Pour into greased and floured 13X9X2" pan. Press whole marshmallows into batter to bottom of pan—in 4 rows, 5 in each row.
Bake in moderate oven (350°) about 50 minutes. Cool on rack.
