Ingredients: 6 tbsp tomato purée; 3 tsp. soft dark brown sugar; 20 g (¾ oz) rolled (porridge) oats; salt and black pepper; 1 tbsp. chopped fresh coriander or parsley, to serve (optional); 1 kg (2 lb 4 oz) sweet potatoes; 35 g (1¼ oz) butter; 1 tsp. ground cumin; 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped; 2 onions, roughly chopped; 3 carrots, diced; 1 tsp. ground cinnamon; 1 tsp. ground mixed spice; 300 ml (½ pint) chicken or lamb stock, or water; finely grated zest and juice of 1 orange; 2 tbsp olive oil; 750 g (1 lb 10 oz) minced lamb

No, we don’t have shepherd’s pie in Jamaica, but it is a great family supper and I wanted to give you a dubbed-up version. There is no chilli in this as children don’t always want much heat, but if it’s for adults (or brave children), then stick in a Scotch Bonnet, too. I have brought something of my Scottish heritage to this by adding oats. This is healthy and economical as it bulks out the meat. Give this to your little angels and they will never want the English version again!
