This is a very traditional cake, common in the rural older parts of Abruzzo around the city of Teramo. The recipe will vary from town to town but everywhere you go in Abruzzo, this is the classic cake prepared for special family occasions and celebrations.

The cake is soaked in a quirky pink liquor called Alchermes which gives pizza dolce its characteristic rich sweet flavour. It is filled with vanilla custard cream and chocolate custard.
