Often beets and barley are neighbors on a plate in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. But they also make a nice dish when combined.
Place the beets in a medium saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, cover, reduce the heat to maintain a gentle boil, and cook until tender when pierced with a fork, 30 to 35 minutes for medium-size beets. Drain well. Peel when cool enough to handle.
