In hot climates, when dairy drinks are consumed, they tend to be the cultured kind, like yogurt, buttermilk, or kefir. A delicious example is this Indian-style lassi, a yogurt drink that can be sweet or lightly salted. Here is an easy salted version.

Ingredients

  • ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon

Method

Toast the cumin seeds in a small dry pan until fragrant, about 1 minute. Coarsely grind in a spice mill or with a mortar and pestle.

In a small bowl, whisk together the yogurt, ginger, cumin, salt, cayenne, and lime juice. Add the ice cubes and let the mixture chill for 5 minutes, then strain into a tall glass.
