Traditional shapes for these spicy cookies include pigs, horses, roosters, gingerbread boys, hearts and stars. The most common shape in Sweden is the pig! Many families hang Pepperkakor as ornaments on Christmas trees along with small animals made from straw.

Method

Combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ground ginger, salt and ground cloves in a medium bowl. Whisk until spices are thoroughly mixed into flour.

Beat the sugar, brown sugar and butter in a large mixer bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy. Add the egg and molasses and beat on medium until well mixed.
