I have memories of my mother baking cakes with jelly between the layers. I distinctly recall this little detail because the edge of the cake layer that rested against the jelly had extra flavor making it my favorite part of the cake. I found it most interesting when my father and his brother, Hector, shared memories of their mother baking a vanilla cake with grape jelly between the layers. Even into their 70s, both brothers described the flavor of this cake with great detail. Being an avid
