My first formal introduction to gardening came when we got our backyard in Oakland. I grow all sorts of things—ingredients that are harder to find at grocery stores and the foods I love to eat. Tomatoes fall right into this last category. Sometimes my tomatoes ripen well and sometimes they do fairly okay; this recipe arose out of a need to use the semi-ripe ones or the ones with weaker flavor.
