REMARKS Maximum length 20 cm. The back is green, sometimes with a blue tinge, the sides and belly a bright silver.

This little fish, which favours the warmer waters of the Mediterranean, the Iberian Peninsula and the Bay of Biscay, is not uncommon as far north as the English Channel, and even reaches Danish waters. It has its counterparts on the American side of the North Atlantic, notably Anchoa hepsetus (Linnaeus), the Striped Anchovy, which is shown below. The band along its side is silver.
