REMARKS Maximum length 45 cm, usual length about 20 cm. The back is a light olive-green. A silvery stripe runs along the side and the belly is creamy white. The species occurs in the Baltic, round the British Isles and in the Bay of Biscay. It tolerates water of low salinity; indeed there are some landlocked freshwater populations.
