For gamekeepers and stalkers, the gralloching, or disembowelling, of the wild red deer on the hill is a necessary part of the shoot. By removing the stomach and intestines, they can see if the animal has any disease and it also lightens the load for carrying the deer off the hill to the vehicles to be transported to the estate larder. The gralloch is also a valuable source of food for predators and scavengers, such as buzzards, eagles, ravens and foxes, particularly if the weather is harsh or wintery.
