Prices of soft fruit now on sale in the larger chain-stores can be very volatile; this is especially true for peaches and nectarines from Spain and Italy, cherries from the United States, Greece and Turkey, and English strawberries. Enemies of seasonality will be promoting pears and Braeburn apples from New Zealand, which also sends nashi (crisp Asian pears) at this time of year. If you’re set on international fruit, look for the excellent greeny red mangoes air-freighted from Guatemala.
