A Diverse Landscape

Appears in
The Italian Regional Cookbook

By Valentina Harris

Published 2017

  • About
Breathtakingly stunning coastlines, verdant green plains awash with vineyards, precipitous snow-clad mountains, rolling hills topped by ancient towns, and swathes of olive groves - Tuscany, Umbria and Le Marche are unparalleled in their charm. Three of the four regions that make up the beautiful territory of Central Italy (the fourth region, Lazio, lies furthersouth), these regions are geographically close, nestling together around the splendid Apennine mountain range. They share a glorious landscape dotted with hill-top medieval towns, but there are subtle differences in landscape, climate and agriculture, which makes their respective cuisines quite distinctive. Despite these differences, their traditional dishes all share a rustic simplicity and demonstrate a sincere, unassuming joy of food.
