Yemen, North Africa, and India
Zhoug, Chermoula, and Indian chutneys (like my Coriander and Kiwi Chutney) are all vibrant, herb-based condiments that share a key commonality: their use of coriander. Despite originating from different regions โ Zhoug from Yemen, Chermoula from North Africa, and chutney from India โ they showcase the global appeal of coriander as a cuisine-defining ingredient.
The spread of coriander across Asia, Europe, and North Africa is largely attributed to ancient trade routes like the Silk Road. As it travelled along these routes, coriander became a staple ingredient in various cuisines, from India to the Mediterranean, and was highly valued for its versatility in cooking and its reputed medicinal properties.
