  • About
On the island of Great Bernera, off the west coast of Lewis, there is a famous lobster pond. Uris is a holding pond where lobsters were kept until they grew to a good size and were more valuable.

Although there are many lobster ponds throughout Lewis and Harris, the Bernera pond is unique for its size and for its history. We do not know who first built such a pond or where the idea came from, but this is one of the first to be constructed. The man who built it was Murdo Morrison, a fisherman, who was born in Croir around 1827. Murdo was a man of vision who achieved much. He planned the dam for the pond and marked the two ends with large stones, then went off to Australia to earn the money required to build it.
