It can get a little bit sentimental when Guadalupe Guerrero and her daughter Brenda talk about their restaurant, El Pipila. They weave in and out of each other’s stories, mother-daughter back-and-forthing about how things really happened.

When they reminisce, the foods Brenda remembers most are the ones that her mother would most like to forget. Brenda smiles, naming the dishes that she wishes her mother would make for her, and Lupe listens silently, her eyes closed tight against the very same memories. When she opens those eyes to speak her own history, it is with the same voice as her daughter, having passed on all of herself.
