The River Cafe was started by Rose Gray and Ruth Rogers in 1987, inspired and influenced by their experience of living and cooking in Italy. Since opening The River Cafe has received acclaim, wining ‘Best Italian Restaurant of the Year’ in 1989 and later in 1998 a Michelin Star, which they have retained ever since. The importance of seasonality, robust flavours - the connection between a region’s food and its wine - remains at the heart of The River Cafe. Together Rose and Ruth published 11 cookbooks, all of which have featured on the best sellers list, including their most recent The River Café Classic Italian Cookbook. Rose and Ruth also presented The Italian Kitchen, a 12-part series for Channel 4. (Rose Gray 1939 - 2010)
