Magic Rub is my go-to BBQ rub for anything pork related. I also use it in my special sauce recipe. This spice gives me the flavor of BBQ without actually cooking anything. I wasn’t the first to call it “magic.” It is a common rub name among pit masters in the BBQ circuit.


  • ¾ cup (75 g) smoked paprika
  • ¾ cup (150 g) sugar
  • ½ cup (50 g) garlic powder
  • ½ cup (90 g) Diamond Crystal kosher salt
  • cup (30 g) ground cumin
  • ¼ cup (25 g) mustard powder
  • ¼ cup (25 g) chipotle powder
  • ¼ cup (25 g) ancho chile powder
  • 2 tablespoons ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons ground cayenne


In a large bowl, stir together all the ingredients until combined. Transfer to a container with a tight-fitting lid and store in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months.
