The word smørrebrød (SMAWR-brawr) actually means ‘buttered bread’ and refers to the base of buttered rye bread that the various fish, seafood, meats or salads are placed on. A typical family meal includes a selection of several dishes, such as smoked salmon, some form of herring, chicken salad and liver pâté, though sliced ham and cheese or cheese-based salads may also make an appearance.
